Jobelle Calimag
UC Santa Cruz

"My mother is one of seven children, and I am the oldest of sixteen cousins on her side of the family. Nobody from my mom's side of the family has graduated college in the United States, so I'll be the first to do so.I know I must set a good example to follow. Although at times it's a struggle, it's also my source of motivation. I've done my best to get help and ask questions from people outside of my family, to reach out to college preparatory programs, to truly achieve and excel in school, all the while thinking of my fifteen cousins. In truth, I will not be attending a university alone. They will be with me every step of the way."
