Kathy Lieu
UC Davis
"My family and community play a great role in my life because they encourage me to do my best and work my hardest, but also remind me of my own responsibility to give back. I grew up in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, which has one of the highest crime rates in the city… As I take on more responsibilities in life, I have learned that determination and following through with my commitments is key to being an adult; others depend on me and it is my job to fulfill my goals. These goals, however, are a product of my own experience, and I realize that after receiving so much help from others, I feel a responsibility to do the same."
Partnerships
Meritus partners with organizations to ensure that we connect to those working with youth at all levels. Supporting students as they transition to college is the next stage of their personal development and educational commitment. Meritus completes the circle for youth development.
Bay Area College Success Network
Meritus is a founding member of the Bay Area College Success Network (CSN), a collaboration of Bay Area organizations providing financial and programmatic support to low-income, college-bound youth. Members of the CSN share information on best practices and innovative approaches to more effectively serve students and families to ensure their success in pursuit of a college education. The CSN is a model of collaboration in support of our students and each other.
San Francisco Unified School District
Thanks to the wonderful counselors and principals of the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), students at each district high school receive information and encouragement to apply for the Meritus program. Meritus also conducts extensive outreach each fall by making presentations to groups of high-potential students at their schools and in community-based organizations. The Meritus Board of Directors is proud to have the Superintendent of the SFUSD as a member of the Meritus Advisory Council.
National College Access Network (NCAN)
Meritus College Fund is a member of the National College Access Network (NCAN). Incorporated in 1995, the mission of the National College Access Network is to build, strengthen and empower communities committed to college access and success so that all students especially those under-represented in postsecondary education can achieve their educational dreams. Through advising and financial assistance NCAN members share a commitment to encourage and enable students to set and achieve educational goals.
